Trip to Denali (Mount McKinley)
(+ lennot)
At more than 6,200 m, Denali is the highest mountain in North America. In the native language, Denali means “The Great One”. For decades, the mountain was known as Mount McKinley, until president Obama reinstated its original name during his presidency.
Denali is extremely popular with mountaineers and freeriders. One of the most dangerous mountains in the world to climb, it claims more lives each year than most other mountains. Our partner in Fish Creek, Henrik Wessel, has attempted to conquer Denali three times. Once, he was only a few hundred metres from its summit. However, the weather conditions have always forced him to turn back, and he has never made it to the peak.

The Denali National Park and Preserve envelopes all of Denali and the entire mountain range comprising several mountains. The easiest way to see Denali is by plane (approx. EUR 300), which departs from Talkeetna and circles around Denali or lands on one of its glaciers. You can easily do this during your week at Fish Creek.
If you want to experience the stunning nature of Denali, including its rich wildlife, we recommend a 2–3 day trip to the town of Denali and taking a guided tour to the park. Individuals are not allowed to move freely in the area without permission or in a private car. In addition to majestic mountains and glaciers, a trip to the Denali National Park and Preserve reveals its rich fauna. During the guided tour, you can spot brown bears, black bears and grizzly bears, caribou, moose (the giant cousin of the European elk), deer, mountain sheep and many bird varieties.
The easiest way to travel to Denali from Talkeetna is by train (Alaska Railroad: www.alaskarailroad.com). You can also take a bus from Talkeetna to Denali, or “car pool” in a local taxi.
